Extracting the most SEO value from your YouTube videos for more visibility – part 2

3 min read

In Part 1 of this guide, we looked at the fundamentals of Youtube SEO which are generally the most important steps to take. However, It’s the little details that count too. Adding info cards, captions and timestamps, although not as important as title, description and thumbnail, collectively give your videos an extra SEO boost and can make a huge difference in extracting the most SEO value from your videos.

Adding info cards

According to YouTube, making ‘strong calls-to-action for viewers to watch another one of your videos’ helps in getting your videos into users’ suggested videos.

Info cards are a way of doing this. Info-cards pop-up in the corner throughout your video and can link to other playlists or videos and if you are a YouTube partner, even your own website and articles. It’s recommended to have them pop-up when your viewers stop watching your videos. You can see this on your YouTube statistics page but on average, this is halfway through the video. You can see a guide on how to add info cards here.

Timestamping your videos and adding captions

You should also consider adding captions and timestamps where relevant.

Timestamps split your videos into different parts like the chapters in a book to make the user experience more seamless but also to let YouTube know what is happening when in your video. Since 2019, Timestamping your video also gives you a chance to be featured in the Google search results as Google supports and rewards videos with timestamps.

Example of a time-stamped video

Additionally, adding your own close captions file can further highlight your keywords and help  YouTube understand your spoken content. You can do this by editing the automatic transcript that Youtube added or uploading your own closed captions file for example. A guide and tips on adding them can be found here.

Overall, captions and timestamps help YouTube understand the video content and makes it easier to suggest your videos and rank you for the relevant search terms. Therefore, they’re crucial in getting the most SEO value from your videos.

Tagging your videos

According to YouTube, tags ‘play a minimal role in your videos discovery’, but it’s still good to add them (without spending too much time on them) as they can be useful if your keyword is commonly misspelt. Additionally, they might nudge YouTube to suggest your video on related content.

When tagging your video, the first tag should be your target keyword. Then, similar to the description, add in variations and partial matches of your target keyword as well as your secondary keywords. The ideal number of tags is between 31-40 and the ideal length is 2-3 words per tag.

Conclusion

All in all, there are many steps you can take in extracting the most SEO value from your videos. Once you create content that retains viewers and responds to their search queries, adding the right title, description and thumbnails are the fundamental steps in extracting the most SEO value from your YouTube videos. Additionally, to give your videos that extra boost, it’s just as important to think of details like captions, timestamps, info cards and tags.

This concludes our 2-part guide on how to improve your videos’ SEO on Youtube for more visibility. We hope you found some of these tips useful and happy optimising!
